Community reacts to approval of new charter school

The Lillian Lee Scholars Charter School, set to open by August 2012, has caused controversy in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district since the community first heard of its proposal. The State Board of Education approved the new school March 1, despite criticism from the CH-CCS Board and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP. Although some community members remain frustrated, CH-CCS Board Chair Mia Burroughs says the district will continue, as always, to focus on its goal of educating students.
